BMW M3 Challenge Makes Me Hate My Dream Car

For those who are interested I have a dream car list, not just a long list of cars that I want to own, but a strategic plan on which car I will own at certain stages of my life. For those who are curious its the Mitsubishi Evolution after I leave post secondary education, a BMW M3 after 30 as a reward to myself for becoming successful and finally an Aston Martin DBZ at 50, a second reward for early retirement, obviously this list stays updated with current models or very rarely an addition due to a very strong impression, but overall the list has stayed consistent over the years.

I realized that these are some far-fetched goals, but I rather dream big and work towards them, then aimlessly hope to land something by sheer luck. But I digress, to the purpose of this post, while doing a little research on my dream cars and the dent they would put in my wallet in the near future, I stumbled across the official BMW M3 Challenge Video Game , I immediately downloaded it as I wanted to see first hand how well the simulation was and overall was excited to pretend to drive my dream car and "practice" what I would be doing soon anyways. Needless to say, my excitement quickly turned to frustration and I quickly questioned myself whether or not I was still an M3 fan. The sheer difficulty of the game was ridiculous, I understand that the goal of BMW was the make the game as realistic as possible in order to give potential customers a taste of what driving a M3 would feel like, but a video game should also be fun, it should highlight the capabilities of the car and build a greater fan base, not turn them away because they get tired of running into walls or spending 75% of the time doing donuts in every corner.

Now, many of you might just think that I am terrible at video games, and am being unfair. But the fact is I have driven cars on a real track before, although not nearly at the capabilities of a BMW M3 (It was an old 93 Honda Civic Si Coupe, at a quarter of the power and a 10th of the price of the BMW M3) should not make it 10 times harder to drive. Overall, I believe that BMW too the wrong approach when using this game to market their product, the game should have been fun and be targeted towards potential up and coming fans, as opposed to making it extremely hard, where only spending countless hours grinding through the game in order to make it around the track without spinning out at least once, and placed in such an obscure location that no more but avid fans would find it anyways.

Favourite Car Ads of All Time, Youtube Further Fuels Addiction

This past weekend I had a family gathering, and I walked across my two younger cousins aged 11 and 8 debating over which car is better. Quite intrigued I sat down to listen to have they had to saw. To my surprise, instead of describing each car by superlatives such as one being cooler, faster or more awesomener,(which I was expecting) but rather were comparing performance stats, and race trap lap times solely on memory. So in awe struck I asked them how they knew such things, because when I was their age, I had a very weak grasp of what they were talking about due to my only resource being from mechanics in the family or car magazines my dad had lying around the house. Their response was simple, we youtube the videos to see which one looks the best and goes the fastest and then watch the car reviews.

Now I have watched many car reviews on Youtube myself, but when my cousins showed me videos of international car advertisements, I became further intrigued and a similar feeling arose within me, that of one that had arisen when I first saw the Porsche 997 promo video. After some thought, I realized how much more of a change it has impacted our lives, now I am not very old, but within the generation gap between my cousins and I, I can clearly see how much more information they have at their disposal, I have always considered myself an informed consumer and make intelligent purchases and often scrutinize products, but seeing how early my cousins are already displaying these behaviours, make me wonder how much more difficult my marketing career will be in the future. But after getting home that night I went online and sought after awe inspiring ads and now I would like to share some of my favourites with you guys!

Welcome and What Started It All!

Hello everyone, and welcome to my blog! As mentioned in the description I hope to use this blog to build a better understand in two fields I am very interested in and look forward to marrying the two in order to find a career within this field.

I would like to begin this first post, by sharing with you what sparked my interest with the whole notion of going into automotive marketing. It began when I was flipping through some automotive dedicated forums during a break in between classes, when I came across a entry about a new Porsche. I had never been much of a fan of these cars, and always felt they were driven by pompous fat cats who had no appreciation for the actual vehicle they were driving but merely showcasing their wealth. But being bored, I clicked on the link anyways, and all I have to say after watching the ad was wow, it was amazing how close it touched home, and could relate to the young boy so easily. Not only that but the ad itself stirred emotions within me and changed my perspective on not only the car but the brand itself, I immediately was intrigued and searched more about the Porsche 997 and fell more and more in love with it.

Now, looking back I realized that one single video may have been the turning point in my career as I hoped to be able to produce something as meaningful and moving at some point in my life, and invoke such emotions out of someone as this ad had done to me, overall in my opinion,I would say that this is one of the most successful ads I have ever seen as I still retain much of what happens within the ad, even though up till a few hours ago when I started this blog, have I seen this video in a few years.
